Holding Sacred Space with Horses
In a world where a state of "doing" is often seen as the only way to be around horses, it's no surprise that so many of our equine friends feel anxious, unable to ever "drop their guard" and fully trust in their human partners. Sometimes, the same applies to the human side of the relationship too. In this session, Rosemary will help you explore the experience of simply "being" with horses - without any expectation or agenda. Experience the potential of how your relationship with horses can deepen when you respectfully enter their space with an open heart and a peaceful mind.

Authentic Leadership with Horses and Humans
Whether you’re interested horse or human development — or both — working with horses can show you what it means to truly thrive in life, offering you tools that open other worlds of creativity, insight, and empowerment, expanding your vision, helping you reconnect to nature, to the herd and to the community. In this session, Rosemary and the Horses will assist in teaching people leadership, assertiveness, personal empowerment, relationship, intuition, emotional agility and inter-subjective relationship skills - with the ultimate goal of expanding both human and animal potential.

Suze Kenington

Connecting with Horses via Animal Communication
This is an interactive session where you will be guided to connect with a horse - past or present. You will get a glimpse into the breath of subjects that horses can provide insight into and begin to discern what's coming from them and what's coming from your own imagination. We will discuss how to recognise your preferred intuitive senses, how to be open to learn what they are actually saying rather than what you want them to say and how to formulate a question that will get the insights you are seeking plus much more. We will also discuss how 'real-time' communication can assist during a therapeutic connection and help us get past the limitations of our 'humanness'. No experience with horses or communication required.

Reciprocal Healing between Horses & Humans
This is an interactive session where you will be guided to offer and receive healing with an individual horse. We will discuss root cause and symptoms of discomfort, along with how both our ego and powerlessness can get in the way and how to bring ourselves into a state of humility, connectedness and receptivity. We will also look at energy in its many forms and learn how being grounded is important from both a science and spirituality standpoint. No experience with horses, healing or communication required.

Hear more about what the horses have to say on Suze's post for the festival blog.

Social Dreaming With Humans & Horses

The invitation is to come together early in the morning in a matrix consisting of both humans and horses. The individual human's night-time dream can be shared into the human/horse matrix.

Once a dream is voiced it is no longer subjective personal property belonging to the dreamer, but an object in its own right with intellectual and spiritual qualities belonging to the unconscious infinite, and now owned by the matrix. The task of the matrix is to free associate and play with the dream, including the horses.

The starting assumption is that there is cultural knowledge in the dream. In the social dreaming process the matrix makes possible and can tolerate a multiverse of meaning. The potential is for new thinking and divergent thought, an illumination of the existential life of the matrix and access to the unthought known.

What might the horses bring? What new thoughts might the humans have?

DLL Youth Ambassadors

Liberty Display & Horse Play
These sessions will be a fun, interactive showcase of the types of horsemanship and games Rosemary usually teaches during Youth Skills Camps and Natural Horse Friendship Days. These activities help build confidence and resilience, and give young people a safe, non-judgemental context to work on and develop their communication, problem solving and leadership skills. As this session is being run primarily by the students, you will see first hand what a positive influence being with horses in this unique way can have on our tamariki. And you will also have the opportunity to participate in some of the activities yourself to get the full experience.

Starting & Restarting Horses
Starting a horse involves teaching them the skills they will need to exist happily & safely in our human world. The aim is to introduce them to new concepts while preserving their natural curiosity & building confidence. In this session Paddy will work together with the Dune Lakes Youth Ambassadors & the youngsters in the Dune Lakes Herd to showcase some ways to start (or restart) horses kindly & gently.

Working With Young Horses
Young horses require a specific type of handling to ensure that they learn how to be safe, enthusiastic partners for their human companions. An understanding of the way horses learn needs to be foremost during all interactions with young horses - both to ensure desired behaviours are encouraged & clear boundaries can be established. In this session, Paddy will work together with the Dune Lakes Youth Ambassadors & the youngsters in the Dune Lakes Herd to demonstrate effective handling practices to ensure fun & safe interactions between humans & horses.

Dreams to Reality

Whilst the idea of making a difference in the world by sharing your love of horses can be inspiring and rewarding, getting the ideas out of our head and into practice can be challenging. While most of us don't do this work for money, it does take money to do it.

This session is for people who own a small business or aspire to start a purpose-driven venture at some point in the near future. Alistair will host a conversation on what it takes to survive and thrive running a conscious equine enterprise.

Trauma To Transformation
"I have been stunned since coming to the art and science of equine therapy in my learning the power horses can bring to healing and discovery for my clients in such a robust and immediate way as to encourage true choice and autonomy of function as the client determines their journey into well being within the safety and balance of their role in their own herd."

Geraldine will explore ways working with horses can help people to grow beyond post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She will also address issues practitioners should be mindful of when dealing with trauma. This session covers concepts, case presentations and calibrations. In conjunction with Rob Pliskin, Geraldine will contemplate the gifts the horses give as expert companions to our clients and our practice.

Equine Family Therapy
During this session, Rosemary and Geralidine will in effect model an equine therapy team comprised of the primary therapists the horses, the equine specialist and the mental health specialist as they discuss several exemplar equine therapy applications.

Rosemary will bring her profound connection with our horses to demonstrate how what happens moment to moment in the connections the horses offer our clients anchors the clients start to their restorative journey in the here and now so that post traumatic growth can truly start to build with the mental health practitioner drawing upon the knowledge of the clinical facts of the persons history, to assist the client where necessary to not just make sense of their experiences but also to experiment with new and healthy self reflections and choices.

Cultivating Body-Mindfulness with Structural Integration

In Centred Riding, Sally Swift’s seminal book on embodiment for riders, Swift emphasizes the importance of mindful intent in the areas of perception, breathing, structural and functional balance and the art of centring in movement and stillness. Structural Integration is an innovative approach to well-being developed by Ida Rolf during the same period as Swift.

Specific myofascial techniques, movement repatterning and guided awareness are some of the tools the SI practitioner uses to guide a client to a new imbalance. Sol will present how SI can assist riders and other human animals to achieve their embodiment potential.

Tai-ji In The Barn

In our high stress world, it is one of the most direct and easily embodied approaches to bring peace, alertness and creativity to the mind, and health and longevity to the body. Sol will offer a daily class of Tai Ji and meditation.

Structural Integration Mini Sessions

During the lunch break Sol and Alegra will offer mini sessions of Structural Integration to festival participants.

Identifying & Healing Body Issues in a Horse with Behavioural Problems
The majority of training and behavioral problems are caused by pain issues in the horse’s body, which are easily corrected. Pain results in a horse that is unwilling to switch leads, girthy, unable to engage its hind end and more! Our goal and program is to bring the horse’s body back to proper form and function where it can effectively heal itself. There are several elements that are factored into healing and balancing a horse: conformation, soft tissue, emotional, muscle memory, nutrition, and toxicity. Join April and learn how you can help your horse regain their natural posture and gait.

Mysterious Lameness - Finding the Root Cause

We are often told that if a horse is unwilling or does not want to do something it is a weakness or behavior we need to train out of them. When in reality it is body parts that cannot move correctly and our asking the horse to do things over and over that makes them compensate in other areas of the body. This can create 'Mysterious Lameness' as well as other hoof and body issues. It is much better for the horse, and easier and cheaper for us, to address the whole musculoskeletal system than simply treating lameness and buying new gear. In this session April will help indentify and treat the root cause of the problem.

The NZ Curriculum is designed to include all learners, no matter what their difference. It's goal is to develop confident, connected and actively involved young people who will continue to learn and to develop the values, knowledge and competencies that will enable them to live full and satisfying lives.

This journey is not always easy and most learners need a hand up at some point in time. Enter the horse! Horses teach you a lot – very little of it actually to do with horses. Their lessons are from the heart. They respond honestly and without judgement. They show us how to listen to ourselves and encourage us to reflect on our behaviour and emotions.

In this session, find out more about the link between learning in schools and the horse as a teacher – the best teacher doesn’t have to be human and the best lessons aren’t always inside the classroom.

Channeling Your Creative Dream Horse
How do you ‘imagine’ a horse? What if you love horses, but don’t own one? Or own horses, but can’t ride – or even love horses but don’t want to ride? Or perhaps you ride, but would like to go deeper into a relationship with the horse... What is it that horses mean to you? Conjure up your magical inner unicorn, and take an exhilarating gallop into the deepest realms of your imagination. Learn to ‘listen’ to your inner horse - write, paint, photograph or visualize its messages. ‘Playing’ with your inner horse can be as joyful as any ‘real’ horse experience in this physical world.

Essential Oils
There is an energetic space Candida has discovered in her work with horses, which is the topic of her next book, The Secret Language of Animals. In this space, there is a psychic communication, beyond time and place, which can occur when people are shown how to drop their 'stuff', and join, through energy work, the horse in a symbiotic session which allows for magic to occur. Candida will also discuss the benefits of oils such as Marjoram for trauma, grief and loss, moving through to oils such as Rose for peace and joy.

Silent Voice

Young ones often grow up in a disconnected environment which can lead to all kinds of challenges later in life – disconnection from the natural life-giving Source within each living being, disconnection from the all-encompassing web of life that binds all life forms together. This lack of connection can show in a range of symptoms, from behavioural, mental & emotional struggles to physical disorders & illnesses. In this course, Birgit gives you some insights into her work with young ones. Bringing horses and young ones together and holding space for connection to happen naturally allows them to hear the “Silent Voice” inside, thus connecting them to their Inner Source of Peace and Balance.

Spirit Horse

Mental Health problems are affecting a fast growing number of the human population - many of which can be signs of a disconnection from vital energies. In indigenous cultures the horse has been revered as a companion and “connector”, reflecting our strength and weaknesses to allow us to find balance within ourselves. In this workshop you will experience some possibilities to recalibrate your systems and find physical, mental and spiritual balance, both for yourself when holding space for others and as tools to share with your clients.

Kathy Andrus

Urine Therapy
Urine Therapy or UT, has hundreds of uses and been used in medicine for 1000’s of years. It was used in WW1 for all the wound healing and sterilisation of the medical equipment and the pharmaceuticals still collect it today to make into 1000’s of drugs. It is FREE and on tap, but has been largely out of the public eye for the last 100 years. In her two sessions, Kathy will discuss exactly what urine is and why it works so well, as well as it's nutrient value to your horses/pets and its stem cell activity. Kathy will empower you with the knowledge to wrap your own wounds for urine treatments, as she has had incredible success with curing horses with laminitis, founder, cellulitis, wounds and all manners of illness’s and conditions. Many in the beginning tried it out of desperation and it saved their horse’s lives. She has also found it to be a brilliant wormer and will discuss her own natural worming program that she uses in her herds of Gypsy Vanners at Brightwater.
